Shasta $9,000 -Journal Note June 13, 2017   "If you want to see the world for the first time, take a walk with an artist!" I’m inspired every time I take walk in the forest located behind The Grand View Ranch and I’m always surprised at what I encounter. Often I see a family of Red Foxes running about. Once in a while I have come face to face with a black bear as he walked aimlessly through…

Final Views of the Convention and Point Lobos
"From the Shores of Point Lobos" I would like to add some final views and impressions about the Plein Air Convention that I attended last week and plein air painting at Point Lobos.  First, the Convention was inspiring and informative, and I look forward to participating next year. Because this Convention is an artistically rich educational and experiential event, I encourage all my painting students in The Grand View as well as viewers of our PBS show to attend next year’s 4th Annual Plein Air Convention, April 13-17, in Monterey, California. This is the last of three plein air…

Plein Air Painting of Asilomar at Sunset
"Asilomar at Sunset" It’s Tuesday, Day 2 of the Plein Air Convention in Monterey, and all I can say is “WOW!” Eric Rhoads and the Plein Air Magazine staff are presenting a convention that is over the top.  This event has the best organization, the best presentations and the largest number of noted plein air artists in the same location than I have ever experienced, and I’m so glad I’m here. And, I never thought so many artists would recognize me from “The Grand View” PBS show, but it is a blast that they do. The first three days are…

Plein Air Painting at Carmel Mission

Plein Air Painting at Carmel Mission
"Carmel Mission in Morning Light" It’s Monday, I’m in Monterey, California, and I went out before the Plein Air Convention opened to paint the effects of morning light on Carmel Mission. This is one of my favorite structures to paint. This morning was one of those mornings when everything went right, including the lighting. Plein air painting seashore towns along the coast in the morning can be tricky because fog can impair visibility, making the locations impossible to see. As you can see in my painting, the light illuminated the Mission magnificently today. Many of the top plein air painters attend…

Plein Air Convention in Monterey
I have been invited to be an instructor again at the 3rd annual Plein Air Convention during the week of April 7-11, 2014  in Monterey California.   This is the largest convention for outdoor painters, and I encourage plein air painters everywhere to come to the convention.  And if you are a “The Grand View” viewer or member attending the Convention, I invite you to paint with me on location during the week. Last year, I painted this painting en plein air called "The Tides at Asilomar" of the ocean near Monterey, California. If you are interested in attending, contact http://www.pleinairconvention.com/ for…
