Artist’s Comments

As an artist I’m always fascinated when inspiration happens. My passion for the landscapes of western America is strong, but I do love to paint urban subjects as well. This week, I was caught in a traffic jam in San Mateo, California,  and I looked over the guard rail and noticed this abandoned Drive-In Movie.  Although I had driven by it many times, today it captured my eye. I only went to one Drive-In movie in my life when I saw “My Side of the Mountain” in 1969. I sometimes wonder if that started my love of nature.
I noticed that there was a group of workmen, their trucks and a big wrecking ball and it looked like they were going to take the building down immediately. I drove over to the exit and down to the theater. I had just enough time to paint this sketch in under an hour. The following day when I drove past the Drive-In Movie, there was only a parking lot.
