About The Grand View Ranch Artist Retreat

The Grand View Ranch is an “Artist’s Refuge in the Mountains.” The ranch is located on 10 acres of protected mountainside land with spectacular views of Mt Shasta. This photo is of Mount Shasta in Winter Snow from The Grand View Ranch, near the quaint and scenic town of Mount Shasta City.  Our Ranch inspires an ongoing commitment to the care and preservation of mountain flora and fauna—enabling our guests to enjoy the natural surroundings of this tranquil retreat.  Ecologically diverse, The Grand View Ranch has a mix of California trees such as dogwood, pine, fir, cypress, and oak forest. Moreover, it offers stunning views of Mount Shasta and the Eddies. This creates a peaceful atmosphere with many inspiring views to paint.

Located in Northern California,  The Grand View Ranch Artist’s Retreat is located near beautiful small towns located in the Cascade mountains. Its elevation is 4,000 feet making it a comfortable environment year-round.  Activities such as skiing, hiking, river rafting, mountain climbing, golfing, and a host of other activities are available to visitors.  Mount Shasta, a city in Siskiyou County, California, is where  “heaven and earth meet” and the water is the purest in the world.  The city is about 3,600 feet above sea level and is near the flanks of the volcano called Mount Shasta, a prominent northern California landmark.

It is my dream to create an idyllic artist retreat, where artists can participate in location painting workshops that nurture the artist in a place of unparalleled beauty and inspiration.      I am interested in offering an experience that reflects the philosophy of one of my mentors, John Ruskin, author of “Modern painters.”  Ruskin rejected the dehumanizing effects of the Industrial Revolution, similar to what we are going through right now, with mass-produced imports from other countries, and very few items made with the artist’s hands, mind, and heart.  I hope to work with other similar thinking artists to make a difference and to provide a location for human connection and artistic expression to grow.  This type of project takes a battalion of helpful colleagues to make it work, and many artists have contributed to this dream.  I thank them with all my heart.

What participants have to say

You do not need painting experience to benefit from Stefan Baumann’s workshop.

I had never touched a paintbrush until six weeks before Stefan’s workshop. I painted one painting a week for six weeks (none of nature) and then drove to Mt Shasta.  I did not know if I would be able to paint anything at all, or even if I would have fun. Result: one of the best experiences of my life. I had a total blast, learned a ton, and want to continue painting. Moreover, I see the world differently now, more colors everywhere, in itself enough to justify the workshop for me.

Thank you, Stefan!
