Artist’s Comments
When I am asked, “What is your favorite National Park to visit and paint?”, I always say Yellowstone Park, and tell them that I love the Upper Geyser basin in particular. This park is unique because it doesn’t have the grand vistas to view as many of the other parks have. This park is one where discovering the enchanted world filled with unique attractions like geysers erupting and paint pots bubbling is the “view.” And the world’s most famous geyser of all, Old Faithful, is located in this basin.
In 1988, Yellowstone was engulfed by wildfires, but the forest service created the fire line at the edges of the Upper Geyser basin to spare this beautiful section of the park from burning. After the fires were extinguished, my group of artists was the first to enter the Park. Many of the park features were closed all summer that year, and since most of the park smouldered for a long time, the wildlife came to the Upper Geyser basin to live. There was one Grizzly bear looking at the setting sun through a steaming geyser one evening. The smoke that filled air made the sunset even more brilliant. I was struck with awe that something like the fire that was so devastating, could also create something so absolutely beautiful and inspiring.
