Itinerary for The Workshop in Tuscany 2021
September 13th-18th 2021
We are delighted that you will join us in one of the most influential cultural and artistic regions of Italy. Florence has been home to many famous artists since the Renaissance — Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Da Vinci to name a few. And now…Stef
Baumann’s crew returns! This document provides information that will facilitate your trip. Your instructor, Stefan Baumann, also encourages you to contact him with any questions you may have prior to arrival. Many of you know Stefan already and are students, whether through his online coaching, his many YouTube videos, or his workshops at The Grand View Ranch. Stefan can be reached via email (StefanBaumannArtist@gmail.com) or by phone (415-606-9074). See you in Italy!
Some of the places we will paint!
Siena, a city in central Italy’s Tuscany region, is distinguished by its medieval brick buildings. The fan-shaped central square, Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. The city’s 17 historic “contra de” (districts) extend outward from the plaza
The wonderful and ancient streets provide hundreds of stunning vistas to paint. We will be spending a day here and both thumb boxes sketches and easels will be used to capture this stunning place on canvas!

PAINTING SITES
Please note that the itinerary is always subject to change, pending weather and other factors (sometimes we pick up a random opportunity that is just too good to miss!). We will paint at the property most mornings. There will also be trips into Florence, this is where your thumb box will handy. We will be there during the full moon so plan on at least one nocturne painting session. Stefan intends to travel out in the afternoon to villages and other sites in the area for continued painting; you are more than welcome to accompany him. You can, of course, continue painting on your own in the afternoon at the property, in Florence, or wherever you choose.
DAILY SCHEDULE &; VENTURING OUT
Workshop instruction takes place in the morning. The start time each morning will depend on where we are painting (nearby or further afield), usually between 7 and 8 am. If inclement weather occurs, we may adjust the workshop time to accommodate. Afternoons are free time and you are on your own. As noted above, you may want to accompany Stefan as he ventures out around the region to paint at other locations. Last year, each painter has the opportunity to paint at least 3 scenes each day with Stefan. Or you may choose to venture out on your own for some site seeing. Train and bus travel from the nearby village is the best option for these excursions. Remember that the village is about a mile away.
There is no transport from the estate to Pontassieve, so be prepared to do some walking or drive yourself or share a ride with someone! If you plan to venture out far afield and/or fairly frequently in the afternoons and have not already done so, you may want to consider renting a car for part of the trip. Cars can be rented in Florence and you can pick one up on any day that you go into the city. Once you leave Florence and get out into the countryside, driving is not too bad. However, the Florence area can experience traffic that is quite heavy and fast. Please note that we cannot provide transport to pick up or drop off car rentals

Florence, the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell’Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”
